Analysis of the office workers’ activities of daily working in an intelligent office environment can be used to optimize energy consumption and also office workers’ comfort. To achieve this end, it is essential to recognise office workers’ activities including short breaks, meetings and non-computer activities to allow an optimum control strategy to be implemented. In this paper, fuzzy finite state machines are used to model an office worker’s behaviour. The model will incorporate sensory data collected from the environment as the input and some pre-defined fuzzy states are used to develop the model. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. The activity models of different individual workers as inferred from the sensory devices can be distinguished. However, further investigation is required to create a more complete model

Quality issues facing Malaysian higher learning institutions: a case study of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

    Get PDF
This chapter analyses the extent to which Malaysian universities have responded to the pressing call for enhancing institutional quality and advocating academic excellence. Malaysian universities have been challenged by both internal and external assessments that suggest that they are not on a par with their international competitors. As a result there have been great demands for an urgent remedy. This chapter explores the progress that has been made in responding to those demands and the limitations that have been encountered. In so doing it provides a case study that focuses on engineering programmes in particular. The chapter is intended to answer the question: can institutional quality improvement deliver the human capital that Malaysia needs in order to remain globally competitive

Hypertension was a disease that classified as a silent killer. Hypertension was a disease that currently includes high and continues to rise, one of which caused non-adherent patients carry hypertension diet. Initial survey research on elderly Setya Budi elderly health center of Reksosari showed 7 of 9 elderly had a relapse, and most of the family members not understand about diet hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge about family relationships hypertension diet with recurrence of hypertension in the elderly in Setya Budi neighborhood health center of Reksosari Suruh Semarang. That study was a descriptive correlative study with cross-sectional design. The sample was 46 elderly family members who had hypertension in the elderly Setya Budi neighborhood health center of Reksosari Suruh Semarang with simple random sampling technique. The data processing techniques used Spearman Rank technique. Based on the results of research and discussion, the conclusions of this study were: (1) knowledge of the family of hypertension as a major diet was moderate category, (2) the recurrence rate of hypertension in the elderly mostly in the category often recur, and (3) there was a significant relationship between the level of knowledge about diet hypertension families with recurrence of hypertension in the elderly in Setya Budi neighborhood health center of Reksosari Suruh Semarang

Effect of source and sink removal on yield attributes and yield of mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]

Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of source (leaf) and sink (flower and pod) removal on some morphological characters, and yield and its attributes in high and low yielding mungbean genotypes grown under sub-tropical condition. Four levels of defoliation (0, 8, 16 and 33%), four levels of deflowering (no deflowering, deflowering of all opened flowers borne up to 10th or 15th or 20th nodes in a raceme), and four levels of depodding (no depodding, depodding of all pods for 5 or 10 or 15 days after anthesis) were employed. The results showed that defoliation had no significant effect on seed yield in high yielding genotype, while it reduced the yield in low yielding one under 16 and 33% defoliation. Deflowering up to 10th nodes had no significant effect on seed yield though deflowering beyond 10th nodes in a raceme reduced the seed yield in high yielding mungbean genotype; low yielding genotype exhibited reduced seed yield under any level of deflowering. Depodding up to five days from anthesis had no negative effect on seed yield though depodding beyond this period reduced the yield depending upon the magnitude of depodding. Pod number per plant, number of seeds per pod and 1000-seed weight were the yield attributes sensitive to deflowering and depodding. The results suggest that mungbean plant, especially high yielding genotypes, can compensate seed yield to moderate source loss and partial sink loss

Influence of the natural zeolite particle size toward the ammonia adsorption activity in ceramic hollow fiber membrane

    Get PDF
Natural zeolite is widely used in removing ammonia via adsorption process because of its superior ion-exchange properties. Ceramic particle size affects the adsorptivity of particles toward ammonia. In this study, hollow fiber ceramic membrane (HFCM) was fabricated from natural zeolite via phase inversion. The effect of natural zeolite particle size toward the properties and performance of HFCM was evaluated. The results show that the HFCM with smaller particle sizes exhibited a more compact morphological structure with better mechanical strength. The adsorption performance of HFCM was significantly improved with smaller particle sizes because of longer residence time, as proven by the lower water permeability. A high adsorption performance of 96.67% was achieved for HFCM with the smallest particle size (36 ”m). These findings provide a new perspective on the promising properties of the natural zeolite-derived HFCM for ammonia removal

Count the cost of disability caused by COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic is well into its second year, but countries are only beginning to grapple with the lasting health crisis. In March, a UK consortium reported that 1 in 5 people who were hospitalized with the disease had a new disability after discharge1. A large US study found similar effects for both hospitalized and non-hospitalized people2. Among adults who were not hospitalized, 1 in 10 have ongoing symptoms 12 weeks after a positive test3. Treatment services for the long-term consequences of COVID-19 are already having to be absorbed into health and care systems urgently. Tackling this requires a much clearer picture of the burden of the disease than currently exists

The feasibility of a role for community health workers in integrated mental health care for perinatal depression: a qualitative study from Surabaya, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Indonesian maternal health policies state that community health workers (CHWs) are responsible for detection and referral of pregnant women and postpartum mothers who might suffer from mental health problems (task-sharing). The documents have been published for a while, however reports on the implementation are hardly found which possibly resulted from feasibility issue within the health system. AIMS: To examine the feasibility of task-sharing in integrated mental health care to identify perinatal depression in Surabaya, Indonesia. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 62 participants representing four stakeholder groups in primary health care: program managers from the health office and the community, health workers and CHWs, mental health specialists, and service users. Questions on the feasibility were supported by vignettes about perinatal depression. WHO's health systems framework was applied to analyse the data using framework analysis. RESULTS: Findings indicated the policy initiative is feasible to the district health system. A strong basis within the health system for task-sharing in maternal mental health rests on health leadership and governance that open an opportunity for training and supervision, financing, and intersectoral collaboration. The infrastructure and resources in the city provide potential for a continuity of care. Nevertheless, feasibility is challenged by gaps between policy and practices, inadequate support system in technologies and information system, assigning the workforce and strategies to be applied, and the lack of practical guidelines to guide the implementation. CONCLUSION: The health system and resources in Surabaya provide opportunities for task-sharing to detect and refer cases of perinatal depression in an integrated mental health care system. Participation of informal workforce might facilitate in closing the gap in the provision of information on perinatal mental health
